Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Mark Greenwood is CEO of SPI Lasers; he joined SPI in 2015 as part of the acquisition of JK Lasers where he was responsible for establishing JK’s Fiber Laser technology base and product portfolio.
In his role at SPI Lasers, Mark has wide ranging responsibilities for the current and future technology platform for the company and is extensively involved with our customers and the Laser community.
Educated at the University of Bristol, where he received his PhD, Mark has since gained over 20 years experience in developing Lasers for a wide range of applications and industries and has had leadership roles in a range of Laser businesses. At Spectron Lasers he served as Technical Director prior to becoming Managing Director in 1998 until its acquisition by GSI Group in 2003. He served as Technical Director in GSI’s Laser Division until 2011 when he became General Manager of JK Lasers and latterly Senior Director of Laser Technology for GSI Group.
Chief Financial Officer
Thomas Reinauer has been CFO, since he joined the company in 2009. He is responsible for all financial affairs, IT infrastructure and the product support service for the company.
Thomas received his Diploma Kaufmann (FH) degree in 1999, from the FHO in Emden. Soon after receiving this he joined the TRUMPF Group, one of the world’s leading companies for machine tools, Lasers and electronics for industrial applications.
During his career with TRUMPF he has held positions within several organisations in Germany and abroad with changing responsibilities. Before he joined SPI Lasers, he was assigned to TRUMPF Inc. US where he successfully supported the transition of the entities in Princeton (US, NJ) and Monterrey (Mexico) from a start up to fully operational organisations.
Chief Operations Officer
Aaron Kentish is Chief Operations Officer for SPI Lasers and has responsibility for Laser Build and Sales Order Management. In this role he leads our procurement, fiber manufacture, laser assembly, quality and transactional information services for both the supply side and delivery functions of SPI Lasers across our factories in Southampton and Rugby.
Graduating from university in 2002 with a degree in Engineering & Business Management, Aaron has almost two decades of engineering, manufacturing and production experience gained within hi-tech industries and is well versed in helping companies achieve their strategic engineering and manufacturing goals.
During his tenure at SPI Lasers, Aaron has held several senior roles in engineering, production and operations where he has established a track record as a transformational leader with expertise in Lean manufacturing, Project Management and Six Sigma process improvement.
Since starting with us back in 2012 Aaron has built many successful teams, as well as successfully delivered a number of key strategic projects, including the implementation of a new pulsed production line Southampton.
Richard Hendel is VP of Sales with responsibility for our global sales network, leading the development of sustainable growth across our range of industrial pulsed and CW fiber Lasers.
Joining us in 2017, Richard brings extensive experience in the laser industry where he most recently worked with Coherent-ROFIN for whom he held a number of sales and product roles since 2000. Prior to that Richard worked in sales for Carl Baasel Lasertech.
Richard received his Diploma in engineering from the Fachhochschule München in 1995 and has worked within the Laser industry ever since.
Graham joined SPI in 2010 and is responsible for all Human Resources policies and practices globally, from recruitment and on-boarding through to training, development and employee engagement as well as the development of the organisation.
Since graduating from Warwick University with an Industrial Economics degree, Graham has built over 25 years experience as an HR professional within Hi-Tech Industries.
Following on from HR roles with Lucas Industries and Pirelli Cables, Graham joined Philips Semiconductors in 2000 and went on to hold a number of International HR Manager and HR Business Partner roles. Latterly, Graham was UK HR Manager for NXP Semiconductors which was divested from Philips, where he stayed until 2010.
Graham is also an avid sports fan and will be found at St Mary’s at every opportunity supporting his local football team.
VP Marketing & Business Development
Dr Jack Gabzdyl is VP of Marketing & Business Development, with expert knowledge in industrial Lasers and more than 30 years of laser materials processing experience. Jack is widely published with over 50 technical conference papers and articles/publications and has given a number of technology based international webinars.
Jack has a degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science and obtained a PhD in laser material processing from Imperial College London in 1989, focusing on developments in laser cutting.
He has since held a number of technical and marketing positions at: Center for Industrial Research (Oslo), BOC Gases, Advanced Laser Solutions and The Welding Institute (TWI) before joining SPI Lasers in 2007. Whilst at SPI Jack has held a number of positions prior to his current position: Business Development Manager, Product Line Manager and most recently VP Sales & Marketing.
Jack is actively involved in the wider promotion of laser technology being chair of the UK Make it With Laser programme and a committee member of the Association of Industrial Laser Users (AILU) for many years. He is still chair of the AILU Special Interest Group for micro and nano laser processing.
Head of Technology
Mike joined SPI Lasers in 2000 and has since held a number of senior positions in the R&D organisation. As Head of Technology, he leads a team of highly-skilled optical fiber and laser specialists and is responsible for defining and executing roadmaps for fiber laser technology, laser architectures and application-driven product features.
Mike has over 20 years’ experience in developing laser and optical fiber-based technology and products for telecommunications, industrial and medical applications. He holds a 1st class Master’s Degree in Physics with Laser Science and a PhD in Fiber Optic Devices for Telecommunications from the University of Southampton, is a co-author of over 50 technical publications and holds 18 granted patents.
Head of Product Development
Paul Skull is Head of Product Development at SPI Lasers with responsibility for the development and deployment of new industrial laser products and accessories across the entire industrial laser portfolio.
Paul graduated from Loughborough University in 1992 with a first class degree in Physics and has since gained more than 25 years experience in the development of optical fiber delivery systems and industrial fiber lasers. He spent the early part of his career in the development of precision optical fiber instrumentation and alignment systems for microscopy, semiconductor lithography and defence telecommunications before joining SPI Lasers in 2000 where he has been instrumental in the development of both the CW and pulsed range of industrial lasers.
During his career Paul has held a number of senior roles and leadership positions across a range of business sectors including sales and marketing, global product support, project management and product development. He took up his current role as Head of Product Development in 2016, cultivating a successful multidisciplinary team across sites in Southampton and Rugby and overseeing the rapid expansion of our industrial laser platform.

Senior Process Development Engineer

How have you developed technically and personally since you joined SPI Lasers?
I joined SPI Lasers in 2011 as a process development engineer having previously developed my career in various semiconductor companies as a process engineer. It was therefore a step into a relatively new field of expertise to join a Fiber Laser company. This role allowed me to combine my physics education with my process engineering skills to realise a role in a field relatively new to me. It was therefore a very steep learning curve to get on top of the science and technologies unique to Fiber Laser manufacture. SPI has a core of highly competent technical staff that were happy to share their knowledge and help me develop the scientific understanding required to fulfill this role while the job naturally provided new hands on skills associated with Fiber Laser development.
SPI has also allowed me to develop personally and take my career forward by giving me the responsibility of managing the process development team. As well as the hands on experience of managing a team of engineers and technicians SPI has invested in my skills by providing the opportunity to go on a leadership development course providing valuable training in management skills and techniques.
Customer Services Manager (Rugby – UK)

What does a typical day look like?
It is difficult to describe any day as typical in customer service as each day is driven by customer specific needs. A customer’s requirement can vary from routine quotes for spare parts to the more complex need for letters of credit, export licenses and certificate of movement and origin. There are internal meetings to make sure we meet customer deadlines and visits from carriers to ensure we can offer the most competitive prices for shipping our products.
In short customer service is never dull, sometimes challenging and sometimes taxing but after a good day, very rewarding.

How has your career developed at SPI?
I am the SYNCHRO Specialist on-site at SPI Lasers.
SYNCHRO is the synchronisation of Man, Material, Machine & Market.
SYNCHRO uses Lean Manufacturing tools & methodologies to eliminate waste from processes, to increase efficiency (doing more with the same resource) and effectiveness (meeting customer demand EVERY time).
In 2001 I joined Southampton Photonics as a Mechanical Design Engineer. I spent many years designing Fiber Lasers until moving into a Project Management role for New Product Introduction projects in 2007. At that time I learned many news things about manufacturing, and how design interacts with Production processes.
An opportunity to become the Product Support Manager arose in 2009 which helped me to see the Lasers from a very different point of view. I saw the Lasers as metal, optics and screws previously.
Our customers saw a red box that didn’t work in their process. I spent 18 months managing a global team of eight engineers attempting to implement policies to assist decision making in a very dynamic environment.
In October 2011 I travelled to Ditzingen (Germany) to start training as a SYNCHRO Specialist. Eight weeks of training in five TRUMPF sites over six months gave a superb grounding in understanding SYNCHRO and Lean manufacturing. Since then TRUMPF have introduced ‘SYNCHRO plus’ which helped deepen my understanding of the application of SYNCHRO.
In my role; I assist improvement projects, train my colleagues, teach and develop employees on the shop floor and coach people to deepen their understanding and application of SYNCHRO to both Production and Office processes.
Manufacturing Engineering Group Leader

What is the best or most rewarding thing about your job?
There is no single best thing about my role within SPI Lasers because the rewards are very varied. As a Manufacturing Engineering Group Lead, I have a role which requires me to interact with every department within SPI to make changes which affect products, processes, and personnel.
As a leader of a team, my responsibilities including guiding and driving my team to meet business demands in a fast paced production environment, as well as introducing new processes and technologies from our Research and Development department. It is very satisfying to work as part of a collaborative team, to see new projects rise from initial concepts right through to production environments and customer products.
