CW Laser Applications

CW lasers have a long history and are most often used for laser cutting, welding and drilling tasks, which in itself see uses across dozens of industries. The continuous wave of powerful energy that is delivered by a CW machine is extremely useful for many sectors around the world, particularly those with a heavy industrial focus. CW laser cutting in the aerospace and automotive industry

These two industries are nicely aligned in terms of the applications for CW lasers. While the two industries differ in terms of the final product that is created, much of the manufacturing processes remain the same throughout; albeit on a larger scale for the aerospace industry.

CW lasers are used in these industries to help cut, drill and weld anything from tiny thru-holes that keep engine parts cool, all the way up to cutting huge sheets of metal that form part of the vehicle or aircraft’s final structure.

Using CW lasers in the medical sector

The medical sector is huge, with medical technology alone having a valuation of around $338 billion. Not only is there a need for speed when it comes to this industry, but there is also the need for the creation of reliable technologies too.

You can’t afford to put a step wrong when you’re dealing with people’s lives, and CW lasers help to provide the focus and efficiency needed to create safe end products.

It’s not just devices and technologies that these machines are used for in the medical sector; they’re also used on people too!

Semi-conductor CW laser applications

The same precision that CW lasers offer the medical sector and the devices created are easily transferable over to the semi-conductor industry too. Involving tiny and intricate parts, CW lasers help to create the semi-conductors that power the billions of technological devices used every single day around the globe.

Use on metal

Perhaps the biggest use for CW lasers, and any fiber laser for that matter, is its use on working with metal. As CW lasers are most commonly used for industrial applications, the majority of which involve metal in some form, CW lasers find a high prevalence in being used to cut, drill and weld metal.

One of the biggest benefits of this type of fiber laser is that it isn’t subject to many limitations when it comes to working with metals, and you’ll find that it’s effective in being used upon a wide range of metals, including, but not limited to: steel, brass, nickel, aluminium and tungsten.

Furthermore, our CW fiber lasers are excellent at working with reflective metals too. Many other types of more traditional cutting lasers struggle with working with reflective metals as the metal reflects back the beam into the machine, and can cause a lot of damage!

Our proprietary technology ensures our CW lasers don’t suffer this problem, making them an extremely useful piece of kit.

Other materials that CW lasers are great at working with

While metal is the most common material that you will find being laser cut, welded and drilled, there are dozens of other materials that industries need to work with every single day. You’ll find that a CW laser is also great at working with ceramics.

Applying CW lasers to space

Powerful CW lasers are being used in trials by oil drilling companies to soften rock to extend the life of drilling heads. This has benefits here on Earth, but also up in space too! It’s thought that we’ll begin to rely heavily upon fiber lasers as a means of space exploration, with a particular focus being placed upon Mars.
