Mithilfe spezieller Geräte, die oft als Drucker bezeichnet werden, und Computersoftware lassen sich komplexe Formen bilden. Der Werkstoff wird in einer Patrone mithilfe von Lasern erhitzt und dann in hochfeinen Querschnittschichten platziert. Diese Schichten werden nach und nach von unten nach oben aufgebaut. Dabei erhält der Drucker die Anweisungen zur Platzierung des Materials aus der Software.
Bei vielen Verfahren der schnellen Fertigung werden Industrielaser als Energiequelle eingesetzt. Unsere Faserlaser sind zentrale Bestandteile vieler Metallpulververfahren.
