Bei der Laserablation werden Schichten präzise von massiven Metallen und industriellen Verbindungen (z. B. in Elektronikprodukten verwendete Werkstoffe) mithilfe eines Laserstrahls abgetragen. Bei niedriger Leistungsdichte erhitzt sich der Werkstoff durch die aufgenommene Energie und verdampft oder sublimiert. Bei hoher Leistungsdichte wird der Werkstoff meistens in ein Plasma umgewandelt. Als Laserablation wird meistens die Abtragung von Material mithilfe eines Pulsfaserlasers bezeichnet, aber bei ausreichender Intensität des Lasers ist Ablation auch mit einem CW-Laser möglich.
