Fiber Laser welding has several advantages over conventional techniques including minimal shrinkage & distortion, small Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) and a narrow weld bead.
Butt welds are an extremely useful process that with the help of Laser welding can replace lap welds in many situations. This can reduce material cost, thickness and weight. As Laser welding is non-contact and only requires one sided access then many previously inaccessible areas can be processed.
This example shows the cross section of two equally thick sections of aluminum being butt welded together. Component fit improves performance but small gaps of up to 8% of the thickness of the thinnest part can be tolerated.
The application of lap welds can be seen in many industrial sectors including automotive and white goods.
