A brief introduction to e mobility
Before we explore e mobility trends, it is perhaps useful to define what e mobility is:
As taken from our definition article – “E mobility (is an abbreviation of electromobility) and is a general term used to describe the principles and concepts of utilising electric powered technologies (e.g. drivetrains). E mobility moves away from existing carbon-emitting fossil fuels to using energy from electrical power sources (e.g. the National Grid) through external charging capability.”/
1) Growing consumer awareness
One of the main obstacles to large-scale e-vehicle adoption is the level of consumer awareness. For many consumers, they class e-vehicles as niche, not for them and a product for the future.
It’s only through awareness that many of the myths of e mobility can be overcome and disproven. The level of awareness is a fundamental requirement for the switch from ICE (internal combustion engine) to electric vehicles. Consumers will generally go through a process of knowledge gathering, acceptance and eventually move on to become consumers.
Important influencers such as governments, automotive manufacturers, energy companies and eco-friendly charities, etc. need to spread the “e mobility gospel” widely and demystify many assumptions to see the e-vehicle market soar in popularity.
2) Continued growth in the electric vehicle market
Naturally, it is expected that there will be growth in the electric vehicle market globally. Although, the 2020 market has been hit by the COVID-19 pandemic (as have new car sales in general), it is still expected that an ever-increasing proportion of new car sales will switch to all-electric and hybrid models.
3) Improvements to charging infrastructure
Expansion of charging locations
As time progresses, naturally there are improvements to the charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. Many commentators believe there is a switch in emphasis from public charging to residential and business charging locations. Expect to see charging infrastructure enhancements in the following locations:
- Fuel stations – an increasing conversion of fossil fuel capacity to electric charging
- Car parks
- Others – gyms, hotels, restaurants, shopping centres
Improvements to speed
Another enhancement to the charging infrastructure is the ever-increasing availability of faster chargers, which will charge e-vehicles in much shorter time periods than before.
4) New electric vehicle models available
All of the automotive manufacturers are now heavily investing in electric vehicle technologies. This is creating entirely new vehicle choices and options to suit a wide range of customer requirements. Customers can expect to see a wide-range of new models, which can only encourage increased ownership of e-vehicles.
Our advice is to carefully identify all of your needs and then pick an e-vehicle which meets them. Leasing may be a favourable option as the end of life price for e-vehicles is often lower due to the rapid technology obsolescence that e-vehicles usually suffer from. With a lease at the end of the lease period, you will just receive another new model and not have to worry about disposal.
5) Smart charging
It is widely expected that smart charging will continue to emerge in popularity. Smart charging occurs where the price charged for e-vehicle charging varies according to the time of the day the vehicle is charged.
The principle is that if the e-vehicle owner charges at a time where energy from the grid is in the least demand, they are given a discount. Conversely, if electricity is used at peak times, it is charged at a relative premium. This strategy helps to manage peaks in grid demand by encouraging usage in the trough periods and makes e-vehicle ownership all the more cost-effective for owners.
6) Development of product range
Think e mobility and many just assume it’s all about cars. The reality is that e mobility also delivers all of the following ways for the consumer to be mobile:
- Drones and unmanned aerial vehicles
- Electric bikes
- Electric helicopters
- Electric hoverboards
- Electric planes
- Electric scooters
- Electric ships and oil tankers
- Electric vehicles:
We expect to see a trend where the entire range of e-vehicles increasingly comes into the focus of the general public.
