SPI Lasers ‘no hot spot’ GTWave technology received US patent

GTWave fiber laser technology is highly efficient.

SPI Lasers, leading manufacturer of fiber lasers, announces that United States Patent Office has granted the company US Patent No. 7,221,822: Multi-fiber arrangement for high power fiber lasers and amplifiers.   The patent describes SPI’s unique GTWave fiber that forms the basis of its redENERGY and redPOWER fiber lasers.

SPI’s patented GTWave technology is a key differentiator for reliable and efficient fiber lasers because, unlike competing designs, it has no hot spots.

With markets for fiber lasers increasing in size and complexity, patented technology for pumping active fibers has become a key differentiator in the competitive landscape.  The challenge is how to couple 10s or 100s of Watts of pump radiation into an active fiber without creating hot spots that ultimately damage the laser.  Even a few percent coupling loss occurring in a splice, taper, or coupler can lead to several Watts of heat dissipation occurring in a very small area.  These single-point injection techniques can result in localized hot spots and product failure.  SPI’s patented solution is to manufacture a composite fiber containing an active fiber and a pump fiber surrounded by a common coating.  Pump radiation coupled into the pump fiber diffuses into the active fiber gradually over its entire length.  The resulting fiber laser has no hot spots.
