Am I able to get a ‘proof of principle’ application sample done in one of SPI Lasers labs?

Yes, contact the salesperson for your region and they will help you fill out the requirements and specifications that are required to ensure we produce the best samples possible. What are the benefits of changing my current YAG, CO2 or High definition plasma beam sources to an SPI fiber laser?

Below are the key benefits of using fiber lasers

Faster Processing- with instant laser turn on, high modulation or pulse repitition rates, ability to vary pulse power, energy pulse, width and modulation rates on-the-fly, fiber lasers deliver faster processing across a wide range of materials and applications.

Reduced energy bills- Fiber lasers are up to ten times more energy efficient than traditional YAG or CO2 laser systems. Consuming little or no energy when not active, their annual energy savings can even attract government grant funded energy efficiency programs.

Greater Reliability-Fiber lasers have no optics to adjust or align, and no lamps to replace. Maintenance is minimal and so utilization and up-times are maximised. The lasers are designed as shop floor industrial tools.

Small manufacturing footprint- SPI Lasers can be air or water cooled and with the largest units only 5U high in a rack mount format they take little space within the machine system of which they are part. Do SPI have a laser that can do everything?

At SPI Lasers we believe in listening to the customer, understanding their application and operational needs before deciding if we have a suitable product within our wide portfolio. Some lasers are multifunctional and can for example, cut as well as weld. We would discuss your application with you and we direct you to the best laser for the job. We don’t always recommend that our customers go for the highest powered or most expensive lasers as often, an application doesn’t require this.

How easy are fiber lasers to use?

Fiber lasers are designed for easy integration by qualified machine builders. Once incorporated into a machining system the user will find operating them very easy indeed.

I work for a university/ academic institute and would like to buy a laser. Are there any discounts available?

Can SPI provide me with a total system for my application?

SPI Lasers supply lasers to integrators and machine builders to incorporate into their own machines. We have good relationships with the machine builders and can provide contact details if requested.  Please ask our sales team to suggest a suitable machine builder for your application.

Do SPI’s lasers come with a warranty?

SPI’s lasers come with a 2 or 3 year warranty as standard and the option of extending this to a further 5 years. For further information please contact your local salesperson.

What does SPI stand for?

At formation SPI stood for Southampton Photonics Incorporated. Through a spin out from the ORC (Southampton) and always based in the UK, the company was originally incorporated in the USA. It is now a part of the TRUMPF Group, Germany and known as SPI Lasers Limited.

Where is SPI located?

SPI Headquarters is based in Southampton in the UK but also has offices in the US with applications lab and office facilities, in China, Germany , Singapore and Korea as well as distribution channels.

Does SPI manufacture its own fiber lasers?

SPI does indeed manufacture its own lasers and also is one of the few fiber laser manufacturing companies that has its own fiber drawing tower.

Can SPI provide laser accessories like scanner heads etc?

SPI does not sell laser accessories but has good relationships with accessory companies and we can provide you with a list of our customers and partners that can provide you with such accessories. For further information on laser accessories please speak to a salesperson in your area.

How fast can you cut?

The answer to this question depends on a number of factors such as the specification of the laser, the motion system, type of head used and the application and material that is being cut. For further information on cutting speeds and applications

Do SPI Lasers have Q –switched lasers?

SPI lasers does not have Q-Switch lasers instead the architecture of the pulsed fiber laser is based on a MOPA laser. The beauty of a MOPA based pulsed laser is that they are more flexible with higher repetition rates which are especially good for marking and engraving.

How often would we need to change the diodes on one of your lasers?

SPI’s uses single emitters which unlike most stacked diodes have a far greater life expectancy. A single emitter generally has a life expectancy of 400,000 hours and is one of the highest in the industry, designed to last.

What kind of help does SPI offer for the integration of the lasers?

There are multiple levels of help available for SPI’s customers that varies from our product manuals, our animated installation guide, global product support teams, telephone support and an optional demo installation service* ( *subject to terms and conditions)
